General Safety Regulation

With safety at your side.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks safety assistance systems.

Safety comes first, especially on the road. As of 7 July 2024, new standards for safety assistance systems will apply throughout the EU with the updated General Safety Regulation (GSR, Regulation 2019/2144 (EU)) to increase general road safety.
The declared goal of Mercedes-Benz Trucks is to provide drivers with the best possible support and relief on their journeys.

The new and evolved safety assistance systems not only meet the standards applicable from 2024, but also exceed them in some respects.
This marks another milestone on the road to accident-free driving.

Every hero on the road can use a little help from time to time. Mercedes-Benz Trucks safety assistance systems are ready for this. Each one features unique capabilities to support in critical situations.

Experience the features in action and immerse yourself in the comic world of the Super Safety Sidekicks.

The four showcased safety systems correspond to a selection of future system generations, which will be available for all models once the updated GSR specifications become binding.

You can find an overview of all the safety assistance systems currently available for each model here:

The evolved Active Sideguard Assist in the second generation901, 1, 905 can support drivers across the entire speed range when changing lanes or turning with restricted visibility. In addition, the two-stage warning system can alert drivers to potential hazards so that they can mitigate a critical traffic situation in good time.

Advantages at a glance.

  • Monitoring on driver and front passenger side
  • Two-stage warning system when a hazard is detected (first visual information, then visual and audible warning)
  • Hazard detection and warning message across the entire speed range
  • Active brake application on the actual side of the vehicle at speeds up to 20 km/h if there is no reaction to the visual and audible warning

The sixth generation of Active Brake Assist901, 902, 903 features 270° fusion technology for enhanced perception of the surroundings and thereby better identification of hazards. In order to prevent an accident, partial or maximum full brake application can be performed in response to stationary and moving objects. This also includes moving pedestrians, cyclists and objects in bends with a large radius.

Advantages at a glance.

  • 270 degree detection of surroundings by camera technology as well as additional radar sensors around the headlamps and to the side
  • Extended reaction to pedestrians and cyclists up to 60 km/h
  • Extended reaction and accident avoidance possible to moving and stationary vehicles in motorway-typical cornering situations up to 70 km/h
  • Significant reduction in accident severity at higher speeds is possible
  • Three-stage warning system once a hazard is identified: first a visual and audible warning, then partial braking, and finally automated emergency braking
  • Good availability in poor visibility thanks to radar technology

Frontguard Assist901 monitors the traffic area in front of the vehicle and supports drivers when the vehicle is stationary and moving off. If the system detects stationary or moving objects in front of the vehicle, such as people, it supports the driver in driving situations up to 15 km/h with hazard messages via the two-stage warning system.

Advantages at a glance.

  • Active in driving situations up to 15 km/h
  • The monitoring range covers the blind spot in front of the vehicle (up to 4 m) across the full width of the vehicle
  • Two-stage warning system when a hazard is detected (visual warning, then visual and audible warning)
  • Possible avoidance of an accident or reduction of accident severity within the system limits

The Active Drive Assist 3901, 905, 906 is designed to support drivers by increasing driving comfort. This is ensured by the interaction of various assistance functions. As the system works across the entire speed range, it can also contribute to increased driving safety.

Advantages at a glance.

  • Works across the entire speed range
  • Automatic distance control with stop-and-go function by Proximity Control Assist
  • Automatic starting and stopping in traffic jams
  • Multi-stage hands-off warning for up to 60 seconds
  • Multi-stage emergency stop function after 60 seconds without driver reaction
  • Electrically assisted steering with active lateral control of the vehicle by the driver within the system limits
  • Visual and audible warning possible when driving across lane marking by Lane Keeping Assist as well as steering back into the lane by Lane Departure Protection
